In the final analysis regarding your promotion, the only thing that really matters is: Did it Work! If not, check to see if you considered these 7 factors…. 1. Target the Right People. If you are selling camper shells you are not going to sell to people who drive cars. It is a waste of time and money. You need to target those audiences who can use your products and services. Look at who you have sold to in the past OR, if you are branching out to new markets, make sure they can use your product or service. 2. You Need a Big Idea. Here is where you need to spend some time. Is your message the same as your competitors? Will the idea pop when read or seen? Will people notice it? Does it create a sense of urgency that the recipient should stop, look and understand your message? An important consideration is how your idea is presented to your audience and what medium is carrying it. Here is an effective place where promotional items could be used. People like receiving them and remember who delivered it to them. If your message does not grab you or your audience, stop and re-think it. 3. Make Them an Offer They Cannot Refuse. Here you have a lot of latitude and that does not mean reducing your price or your great customer service. This must be something they will respond to, take action, call, email, fill out a form, etc. Here is another location where a promotional item could be used as an incentive. Act and we will send you something and if the promotional items are chosen correctly they will reinforce your promotion and your message. 4. Add Value. There are many ways to do this. A value they can use but directs them to purchasing your product or service. Upgrading to a higher level, extra product, longer support service. Every business has something they can add which in the purchaser’s mind adds value. 5. Credibility. You must always prove yourself and your claims. This is done with facts, examples case histories. But, also, how you present yourself. A cheap, untargeted promotional item reflects on the business that sends it. Clients relate to the quality and type of item to the company who sent it to them. 6. Testing. If you are using promotional items, test which one client are drawn to. This can change just like fashion. Something could be popular this season and not the next. Summer vs winter infers a different approach. You would not offer a jacket in the summer or a cooling towel in winter. Change your added value to see which one is more attractive to your target audience. 7. Use Experts. For many areas in your business you reach out to experts: IT, accounting, social media, lawyers. Do the same with a well-established promotional consultant/expert. Not an order taker, someone who will work with you on the promotion from the beginning to the end. The design, packaging, artwork, the item itself, copy, and most important of all, the selection of the promotional item. There is no way you would know all the options for promotional items that are available to you. Remember… Every time you send something out to a prospect or valued client, it is representing your company. Whatever you do, it should be the best you can do. This maybe the only communication the audience knows about your company and how you present yourself will be how they will think of you and remember you by.
